surra-de-bunda:

This is something that I’ve thought about for a while. But why is it whenever there’s a new Black woman artist (even, often times a Black man artist) who is obviously on their way to stardom and they’re making waves, there’s like a legion of people trying to expose them or knock them down? I never see this with white artists.

Any time a Black woman is a new artist and she has a hit or two and things are looking promising for her, there’s radio stations creating rumors or people coming from nowhere trying to discredit her? I’m thinking of this Cardi and Nicki shit and even when Nicki first came out, she had so many people at her neck trying to discredit her and expose her just how Cardi is going through it now. People always say that female rappers are too competitive, catty and there’s no unity but that’s the atmosphere that they are in. It’s really like we are forced to feel there is only 1 spot available or we’re worthless.

When Ciara had her hits in the beginning, rumors tried to discredit her regarding her gender. Same for Olivia. Donna Summer said she went through the same thing. When Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Total, Missy Elliott and MJB came out, there were rumors regarding their sexualities to get people to not fuck with them. Same with Nicki allegedly being a stud before she became a rapper (which it was obviously not her in the video). When Bey went solo, there were a lot of rumors about her having a nasty dominant narcissistic attitude and she had hundreds of hate sites. I can go on and on.

I started even thinking about what Golden Brooks said about how Black actresses are told they are ‘washed up’ if they take a few years off to be moms, while their white counterparts can take a damn decade off, return to acting and no one says anything negative.

It’s forever something negative regarding Black artists. It’s always a scandal. It can never just be about the talent.

Is hip hop and R&B just too competitive? Why are Black women treated like this and all the white women in the industry have their own lanes and no one trying to stop their bag?

It’s true. All these white men and women, gay or straight, can say and do the most disrespectful or rude shit and no one really sabotages their career. Johnny Depp beat up his ex wife, was an alcoholic mess and his face is plastered all over every bus in London for a new children’s movie. It’s like everyone has chosen to forget what he did. Black women can say something wrong out of ignorance and their suddenly Lucifers little sister. It’s trifling.
